25 Facts About Me

I was reading a friends blog the other day and she was doing a 25 Facts About Me Tag, so I thought I'd give it a go for today's post, so hold on tight here's a whistle stop tour of me;

1. I'm English, born and raised in Sunderland Northeast England, this is on the north sea coast and it can be rather cold!

2. Being from Sunderland I'm classed as a Mackem, but I don't have a strong accent

3. I lived in Bellingham WA when I was at Uni as an exchange student and came home with a strong American accent - go figure!

4. I hated school, I was bullied from the age of 5 till I was 16, the worst years being between 8 and 12
so School was the worst time of my life.  It's something I still struggle with to this day. At a time when you should be learning to be confident, build relationships and all the social skills you need for life, I was taught the opposite.  I still struggle with confidence in myself and my appearance and I do find it hard to develop relationships.

5. I have a golden retriever named Hero, he is the third Golden I've had in my life time.

6. I started writing when I was young and decided in my late teens that I wanted to write as a carer.

7. When I was little I wanted to be an accountant, but I did a weeks works experience with an accountancy firm and it really put me off.

8. I have a scar on my left hand from a dog bite when I was 11

9. I used to spend every Saturday/Sunday morning at the beach with my grandad watching the boats go out to sea. I didn't know at the time but it was part of his way of dealing with PTSD from WW2.  He was a tail gunner in Lancaster bombers and was taken POW when his plane went down following a bombing raid on Berlin.  Unfortunately he died when I was 16 and studying for my GCSEs, I don't think I've ever got over loosing him.

10. I work in Fire and Rescue but I'm not a firefighter. However, when I started my job my boss decided since I was working predominantly with operational firefighters I needed to understand what they did, so he put me in a training fire!

11. I'm rarely without make-up, it's a hang over from being bullied; when someone tells you your ugly for a long time it's hard not to believe it, so its self confidence thing I've never quite got over.

12.  I have no tear duct in my left eye - I had to have a new one created in 2012

13. I love driving, my dad was a car mechanic and while I don't mind what type of car I just love being behind the wheel.

14. I prefer living in the country to living in the city - I like the quiet.

15.  I don't like football - I much prefer Rugby and was a season ticket holder at Newcastle Falcons for a while.

16. I have an older brother, we didn't get a long as kids and we still sometimes clash now we're older. My mam could never get a photo of us together we refused to be anywhere near each other, so any photo of us together as children was taken under duress.

17. I lost my dad five years ago and grief isn't something you get over it's something you learn to live with.  I now live with my mam who is my best friend and we try and get through life together.

18. I can't eat spicy food, I'm not sure whether I'd call it an allergy but my body just doesn't like anything with a hint of spice - I even struggle with pepper!

19.  I self published my first novel in 2012, because I got tired of waiting for a moment and decided to make it happen myself

20. I'm in the middle of a reading challenge and I'm 10 books down this year which is good for me.  It may not sound a lot but reading is a luxury when writing, working etc.

21. I don't like having my photo taken and I don't take selfies - again it's scar from bulling that still itches at the edges.

22. I love watching YouTube videos, I like the escapism and inspiration of make up, beauty, clothing, home design

23. I go to the movies at least once a week with my closest friend and I drink a Starbucks Venti Breakfast tea every time we go.

24. I love Christmas and I'm the annoying person who's Christmas tree is up by December 1st and is taken down just before 12th night!  I love everything about the season, the food, the movies, being with family, the weather, giving presents.  I start planning for Christmas on January 2nd!

25. I have an over active imagination, it never shuts off which can be a blessing and a bit of an issue! I think it's what helps me to be a writer but also it can unnerve me if I stop thinking positively.

SO, this is me, some of these were hard to put down and although they maybe deserve more detail it's not always easy to put in to words what you really think and feel for people to read - even if you are a writer.

If there's anything else you'd like to know - ask....

Alas Poor Hamlet

I love London, I love theatre land, unfortunately I donā€™t get there as often as I would like, which is why I love the National Theatreā€™s live streaming of some truly remarkable performances. The Barbicanā€™s current run of Hamlet staring Benedict Cumberbatch was the latest offering, which I was glad to see knowing I wouldnā€™t otherwise get the opportunity to see the performance. The Barbican is a grade two listed building, from architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon as part of the regeneration of Londonā€™s bombed landscape.   It opened in 1982 and is Europeā€™s largest multi arts and conference venues. Hamlet (5 August ā€“ 31 October 2015) Shakespeareā€™s great tragedy has been adapted for the stage by Director Lyndsey Turner and Producer Sonia Friedman.   The run time is approximately 1 hour 50 minutes. Hamlet played by Benedict Cumberbatch is grieving for the loss of his father and is enraged by the marriage of his mother to his uncle.   As war looms outside the g...

Man From Uncle - Movie Review

Late 2013 I read an article on Guy Richieā€™s new project, taking on the 1960ā€™s TV Series ā€œThe Man From Uncleā€ and I remember feeling rather excited.    Having seen other 50ā€™s and 60ā€™s shows reimagined and revitalized, Hawaii 5-0, Mission Impossible for contemporary audiences and having seen how Guy Ritchie adapted Sherlock Holmes for a stem-punk action generation I was intrigued to see how he would approach the world of cold war espionage and make it relevant to a modern audience. As a child growing up in the 80ā€™s a lot of my TV habits were dictated by my parents and grandparents   and they all loved TV dramas like Chips, Dukes of Hazard, The Saint, Mission impossible and The Man From Uncle which were on re-runs throughout my childhood.   I vague memories of watching Robert Vaughn and David McCallum strut around opulent sets looking rather dapper in a similar style to how I remember my grandfather dressing.   It was in a way dated to me even then but in a ...

It's all about the base...

As someone who has word make-up her whole life for multiple reasons I'm always hunting for the perfect base as the first step in my daily makeup routine. Like most, my skin is far from perfect with a few freckles, imperfections and I'm English pale but not the rosey glow kind so I need to attempt to create that flawless fin ish everyone is looking for be it matt, dewy or natural. There are now so many types of primer on the market it can be daunting, do you need BB or CC Cream, a mattifying primer or a tinted one?   As usual I always go to the experts for advice and try the products together which should work together. In any review there's always and best and worst, so I'm starting here with the worst and building up to the grand finale:  The Not So Good  Clarins SOS Primer -in Universal Light  & Ever Lasting Youth Fluid Foundation in 107 Beige  Clarins has always been a go to line when my skin has been most sensitive. ...
